officer hernandez who crumbled to the floor. the suspect walked away, turned around, and saw hernandez squirming on the floor. the suspect came back, shooting hernandez again, killing him. five people were shooting with including the suspected gunman, paul ciancia who is in critical condition. two others were treated at hospitals and released. 29-year-old high school teacher is in fair condition. he was shot in the leg. now to cnn stephanie elim outside l.a.x. stephanie, you spoke with a passenger who witnessed a shooting. >> reporter: don, it was crazy to hear his story. he said everyone hit the ground. he was up above the escalator, in he curity, wh when everything happened. there was a pause and he looked back down and that's when he saw everything else. take a listen. >> we were at security. we heard the initial gunshots. and everybody in security hit the ground. a lot of folks were scrambling forward. so there was a pause. i look down the escalator and i saw the gunman. he had his gun trained on the wall there and he shot him twice. so i knelt down and i saw him run up the escalat
firing. he first shot t.s.a. officer gerardo hernandez who was checking documents and boarding passes at the bottom of the escalator leading to the t.s.a. checkpoint. a law enforcement source told cbs news after shooting hernandez, ciancia headed toward the escalator but saw hernandez was still moving so he doubled back and shot him again, killing him. at the top of the escalator, ciancia arrived at the t.s.a. checkpoint and entered the area behind security by taking the exit lane reserved for deplaning passengers. he then headed straight down the concourse. sources say he appeared to be hunting t.s.a. officers as he fired away. witness statements and a review of airport security video also indicates to investigators that t.s.a. employees were the gunman's only intended targets. police believe other passengers who were wounded either by gunfire or trying to escape were struck by rounds that ciancia fired at the t.s.a. officered but missed. >> pelley: john, some police departments put armed officers at the checkpoints. the t.s.a. officers aren't armed. why were there no armed l.a.p.d.

officers at point-blank range at los angeles national airport. gerardo hernandez is the first tsa officer to be killed in the line of duty since the office was created 12 years ago. as with all tsa workers, hernandez was unarmed. police say the suspect paul ciancia had a note that said he planned to kill multiple tsa officers and wanted to, quote, instill fear in their traitorous minds. joining me msnbc correspondent pete williams. what are we learning? what's the latest on this alleged gunman? >> this is not where one of those investigations where every 10 minutes brings some other revelation. this is a long slow go to try to figure out the answer to the key question, which is why did he do it. there's nothing that his friends or roommates say this they thought he was an adherent to this extremist anti-government view expressed in this handwritten later, which is a general rant of the usual stuff about the federal reserve and federal government and the currencies and one world order and all of that. for some reason a specific attack on the tsa which he said was vilding his constitutional
